The Reconstruction Era was a period in American history that lasted from 1865 to 1877. It was the time after the Civil War when the United States tried to reunite and rebuild itself after the devastating conflict that divided the nation into North and South. The Reconstruction Era involved many political, social, and economic changes that aimed to protect the rights of African Americans who were freed from slavery by the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment. Some of these changes included passing laws like the Civil Rights Act of 1866, creating agencies like the Freedmen’s Bureau, and ratifying amendments like the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. However, not everyone supported these changes and many challenges arose such as violence from groups like the Ku Klux Klan, resistance from Southern states through laws like Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws, and corruption from politicians like Carpetbaggers and Scalawags.
